About the project

With the CitéZen project, Thionville is bringing in a new network of electric buses (a high-service level bus network) covering 32 km. The centerpiece of this transformation is a viaduct crossing an array of railway lines and a canal, which are major obstacles for the bus route.

The viaduct consists of two separate decks: one straight, and one curved. With a mixed metal chamber structure for the decks, the bridge is 310m long and 16m wide.

What was PRO-FOND’s contribution?

A co-contractor with BOUYGUES TP RF, PRO-FOND was brought in to install the foundation piles for the structure’s 11 supports, ensuring the viaduct could support the new bus network’s lines. We also helped complete the access structures leading to the viaduct, including a single and double gantry with two backfill ramps stabilized by retaining walls.

Which techniques were used?

This was a railway site with its special constraints, so PRO-FOND adapted its driving methods to install 32 x 1220mm piles and 33 variable-diameter (600 to 1200mm) piles using incremental tube drilling.

Which challenges did PRO-FOND have to overcome?

This had to be completed at night, reducing visibility. We also had to execute complex maneuvers in a tight space. PRO-FOND overcame these challenges by applying strategic scheduling and the use of specialized cutting-edge equipment to ensure the operations were completed safely and efficiently.
